This is more a mild annoyance than a serious behavioral problem that I’d like to address with my one year old lab. Honey gets excited when visitors come and will sometimes spin in circles near them out of excitement. This has tripped or knocked a few kids over before, and I’m nervous it’ll be my elderly grandma next time. I envision a dog that calmly and politely greets visitors with tail wagging but not the antics like my mom’s lab. How can I achieve this? Or is it simply that my lab is more high energy than my mom’s lab (which she totally is) and that’s just the way it is?

Hi my 16 month old lab does this too. Now every time we have a visitor I place her behind a door gate so she can't injure anyone. We wait until she calms down(which can take a while!)before we let her out. We've also warned guests to ignore her completely. After a while she goes and lays down.

Cooper can be like that even at 4 years. When some one comes to the door she sometimes goes berserk with excitement. After a few minutes she calms down to her normal mellow self. Sometimes, when visitors come, we put her in the kitchen behind the dog gate until she calms down.
