Hello, my 6yo lab has developed a haematoma. Have been to vet and got treatment for ear infection (probably the cause of the problem) but vet has said lab will need surgery. However I have spoken to a couple of people who have said their vets told them to just leave haematoma to go away naturally. Has anyone else had experience of haematomas? What were you advised and what did you do? My dog is not in pain. I think the haematoma is getting slightly bigger and I have an appointment for a different vet next week to get a second opinion. His lump is pretty big and spreads over most of his ear flap. Thank you!
How long has he had it? Sometimes if they are drained quickly, or disperse quickly on their own, they don't come back, but if it has been there a while, it may need surgery to prevent it refilling.
The problem with leaving them alone though, especially a large one, is that when the blood eventually re-absorbs it often leaves the ear flap thickened and crinkled up.
