I plan to get my female lab spayed in the next couple months and curious if anyone else has had the Gastropexy done at the same time. I plan to have the spay done Laparoscopic like i had done for my Golden, but she didn't have the Gastropexy done. Wasn't til recently that the Vet told me about the procedure.
That is what makes this a tough decision. The Vet brought up good points both doing and not doing it. Couple benefits of doing it at the time of spay are; Only 1 time under anesthesia, only one recovery time instead of two and lot lower cost. I was talking to a specialist as well and they said the Vet at their center does it as routine when they do the spays. None of my dogs in the past have had it done, but worried with the rough play she does with my Golden and other dogs she could have an issue. Then again, not crazy about unnecessary surgeries.
Interesting. You have a captive audience here of plenty of lab owners. MAybe you could see if anyone on here has had an issue of a lab with bloat?
Very interesting..there are many labs around me and I have never heard of a case of bloat. My brothers Weimaraner died of it but he was a huge deep chested dog with other things going on. I used to have Newfies and was warned about it then. That was years ago though and it was trendy to raise food and water bowls. I am not sure bloat is a real issue for labs..but am sure others will come along with experiences . I think I would be cautious and need some evidence that it’s a real risk for labs.
Here is a recent article found on a Lab site https://www.thelabradorsite.com/bloat-in-labradors-what-are-the-risks/ and another one i came across https://pets.thenest.com/labradors-bloat-5290.html
It appears the chances of getting it is low in Labs compared to some other breeds, but still possible. One other article i came across https://www.labradortraininghq.com/labrador-health-and-care/bloat-risks-symptoms-prevention/
Is there a history of bloat in the lines your pup comes from? If not, if it were my pup, I wouldn't do it.
I think this op is almost unheard of in UK Labs. Labradors in general are at the low end risk wise for bloat and GDV. I personally wouldn't consider it for my dogs even though I had a Weimaraner who survived bloat.
