We made the mistake of not renewing the 4 weeks free insurance with buddies we got for our puppy. She has had a urine infection which needed lab test and antibiotics twice and we are not sure if it is resolved because she still has the yellow green mucus after or with peeing sometimes. This started in the first week we got her but we did not claim on the policy.

I have researched insurance today and realise that if I start any new policy now she will NEVER be covered for another urine infection!
I am going to try and ring buddies tomorrow to see if they will do if we insure with them but I guess it's not likely.

Any tips for buying pet insurance now? I don't really know what amount to cover for? Should I include dental cover?

    Hi
Did you have any luck going back to the insurers? I think probably not.
Unfortunately once a condition is flagged it is excluded if you change insurers and when you put in a claim they ask your vet for full medical history.
As the owner of a young dog with cancer I would say to buy the best cover you can afford and buy lifetime cover.
I thought I had £6000 pa per condition lifetime and that would be enough to cover most ailments but Toby’s cancer treatment so far has been around £11000 over 5 months.
    Here comes the good news!
When I asked for a balance, when I knew I was nearing the £6000 and had been saving hard for the rest of his chemo it turned out the policy renewed every month and I had £6000 per month. I have to say I cried!
The cancer specialist have been surprised there is not a monthly excess.
I have had to cover a few exclusions as they have a limit for consultation fees and don’t like to pay for things like waste disposal!Saying that I have paid out hundreds rather than thousands.
Obviously I expect the premiums to go up next year(£23 pm now)
I am with The Insurance Emporium.

We were looking around at pet insurance when we got Bella and after reading many horror stories about poor overall well-being coverage (normal office visits, spays, etc.), large premium increases and policies that don't pay once a condition is treated once (and flagged as pre-existing), we decided to self insure instead. We have an automated monthly account transfer of $200, so $2400/yr is budgeted. Hopefully she won't have any major heath issues, but I just couldn't see paying an insurance company for the chance to take our money during the good times and then try to screw us over when we have a claim.

I have had great success using Embrace Pet Insurance. Have had them for 6.5 years now with my Golden and also my 10 month old Lab. So glad i did. My Golden has had skin/allergy issues that cost me a lot of money which i got 80% back. On my Lab, she had been limping and had a CT, Xrays, and Ultrasound done and i got 80% of that cost back as well. You can choose your deductible as well as % you get back with them. It has more than paid for itself with my 2 dogs.
