Hi, I'm looking for a bit of advice on the right amount to feed a Lab pup. Our puppy is 3 months old and we use a mixture of wet and dry Pedigree Chum puppy food. The packet gives its recommendation of how much to give based on anticipated adult weight.

The Vet has said our puppy is expected to weigh around 25kg when fully grown, so on that basis - according to the recommendations on the food packet - we should be giving her 12 100g pouches a day split between three meals. The dry food recommends a lower amount so we are currently giving her six pouches - 600g - and 100g of dry food, split between breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I'm not sure if this is right - it seems like it's too much to be honest. Does anyone have any advice on the correct amounts of wet/dry mix to be feeding her?

    No no no :)
You need to feed based on her current weight and body condition. 12 pouches for a 12 week old puppy PLUS dry food is way to much.
This aside, you may want to look at allaboutdogfood or a similar website to choose a better food for your baby.
Just for a ball park figure, I feed mine raw. A 4kg puppy would get AROUND 250g of meat a day. This will vary greatly between pups.
1.2Kg of wet food plus 100g of dry would feed 3 of my adult working dogs.

    PS Welcome along :)

They always over estimate what you should feed, keeps them in business ;) Feed to the needs for the dog in front of you. We use James wellbeloved a fairly decent food for reasonable price. Low poo output and shiny coat. Recommendations 400g a day..she gets 300g a day ...she’s fit as a fiddle and a good weight. Dog food choices are multiple and confusing, it’s all down to personal choice at the end of the day.

Our 13 week old puppy is on about 255g a day this week. We feed Simpsons 80/20 premium puppy food it was ranked 90% nutrition on all about dog food and is £56 for 12kg at pet planet. Had our puppy 5 weeks and used just over half a bag.
We do add in some Salmon and carrot with puppy peanut butter and banana as snacks during the day. We apportion it so that we feed 85g 3 times a day and then about 30g of something for supper to help her through the night.

If you want to get as precise a calculation as possible, I would recommend calculating by calories. Figure how much only dry food is recommended and then how much only wet food is recommended. In theory this should be the same or nearly the same number. As was said, it’s probably better to put more significance in recommendation for current weight as opposed to future weight, if possible.

After you figure the sum recommended total, I would probably reduce that by as much as 15-25% because it is normal for manufacturers to overstate the recommendation. Maybe someone else has a better idea for what percent to adjust by, but that’s my personal estimate based on just my experience.

Once you know how much the adjusted sum total should be, calculate what proportion of your preferred wet/dry mix would add up to that total. Monitor any changes in eating habits and body composition going forward. The waist should visibly taper. Ribs should not show but the outermost should be just palpable under a relatively thin layer of fat when sliding your hands down the sides of the body.

I would recommend wellness core puppy food, as I don’t think pedigree is too great, wellness core has a 81 out of 100 score and my puppy thrives on it, her coat is beautifully shiny and her poops are good 90% of the time. We feed her the large breed one! I also give her a raw egg once a week and sometimes mix in some cooked turkey (nervous to feed meat as I’m a vegetarian so salmonella etc scare me hah). We buy it on amazon and it’s £35 for a 10kg bag, so not cheap but worth it for the benefits to your pup
    :)

Thanks everyone for the responses. I thought it did seem like a lot, she wolfs it down and would take double if we gave her it, but just a typical greedy lab!
