hi guys I’ve taken comfort in the forum being able to talk to pup owners that are going through or have been through the same as I am going through..

I’m wondering what’s your advise for play biting and biting in general? We are removing him or ourselves from the situation and when he’s calm after a few mins we tell him sit and good boy and let him back through the stair gate that separates our open plan kitchen and living room we wait until he is quiet to come back in.

But I’m just looking for any advice on chews for him? The best chew toys?
The best way to handle everything?

    Thank you
Teide and pies (9 week old golden lab boy)

Poppy loves this little white bone chew that’s milk flavoured we got from pets at home. It was in the puppy section!

We were told an empty plastic bottle, remove all labelling, lid and plastic rim/band around top - kept Lola amused for a good wee while and have her a good chew for when she was proper teething.

We also found completely removing attention helped and she started to realise biting didn’t work out well for her as no attention meant no play. It’s tough going the biting/teething phase but it gets easier, we just kept thinking she doesn’t mean it and it must be painful for her but bloody hell do those puppy teeth sting x

Hi thank you for your reply!

That’s such a good idea! We have so much recycling we could give him to play with!
I will try the bottle idea out today!
My partner said he bit his foot last night so he put him behind the stair gate for a couple to mins and he calmed down and didn’t do it again at all! So I think he is learning :)
    How old is Lola??

Lola still has a good chew on a plastic bottle now :) she is almost 6 moths old.

sounds like he is learning, labs love attention so taking that away should teach him that isnt behaviour you want from him.

Kyko's almost 15 months now & still loves bottles and cardboard boxes. He also carries the mail in from the letterbox & if it's junk sits with it in his mouth until we tell him he can have it then shreds it for us. He's better than any paper shredder, he's also never chewed any letters he's not supposed to

    Thank you so much!
He is for sure learning that we don’t want very bitey behaviour!
Yes he does for sure love attention and when I remove myself he gets upset and then when he comes back out he doesn’t repeat the behaviour which is fab! The more it happens the more he will learn :)
Pies absolutely loves the plastic bottles runs like crazy with them!

we were very lucky with him, he has only ever chewed his own toys & the boxes and things we have let him have. He also only ever bit twice & strangely both times with me :D. I'm the idiot who gets on the floor and rolls around with him

We've found a few things that have helped. As above plastic bottles help, and using the Kong wobbler keeps him occupied and tires him out. In regards to biting the best thing for us has been natural antlers and buffalo horns. Really helps with the drive to chew and he loves them both. Keeps him occupied for ages and we've seen a big improvement. Cooper is 16 weeks and our vet said he is fine to chew on them both. I got both from pets at home.

Hi Teide and Pies. Well we have now reached 5 months and Hero is an extreme chewer as well as having been a right crocodile and I had a few weeks of bruised and bloody arms and hands but we worked on bite inhibition and got an assortment of chewy toys which seem to have decreased the problem. Kong wobblers are fantastic. Keeps him occupied for about an hour when stuffed and put in freezer for bout hour. He has Kong bone, a key teething ring, varying rubber toys from softish through to Turbo rubber. An old towel or teatowel soaked, twisted and frozen is another suggestion but must be supervised once it becomes pliable again incase pup starts eating it. Teething pups need things of different texture to choose from depending on how much their mouth is hurting. Hero also loves ropes but these don't last overlong until he can shred them. He loves the noise empty plastic bottles make and will throw one about for ages. Admittedly we have gone through suit a few toys in the last 3 months so basically we invested in as few really high we quality toys and the rest we improvise with stuff round the house which would be recycled. Another thing which has worked with him is to keep his mental stimulation going. Try hiding a few treats and let his natural sniffer talent come in to play. Puzzle games and bottle spinners also work. An active, stimulated

All my labs have loved bully sticks which were recommended by my vet. Also, as recommended earlier, stuffing kongs with canned dog food, cheese, or peanut butter and then freezing them will keep a dog happy for quite awhile. For a quick chew, I give them apple pieces or carrots as well. If you put some kibble in the plastic bottles, it makes a great rattling sound as they shake it and the dog has fun trying to get it to fall out as well as just enjoying chewing on the bottle.
