We are crating Charlie at night and recently he has started weeing and soiling in his crate. The first 3 or 4 nights he was in it he was clean but now he will relieve himself in it. He was waking us up and I was taking him outside in the night but he doesn't do that anymore so I am going to set my alarm and get up with him. I am staying up as late as I can (around midnight) but I'm getting exhausted as needless to say he is up early too! Should I set my alarm for every 2 hours in the night or will that start a pattern of him waking and me giving him attention. I am unsure what is best. Thanks

    Hi Emma,
At first Harley was clean and dry for the first few nights, but she did the same as Chatlie. We put a puppy training pad in her cage at one end and her bed at the other end of the cage. She used this to wee only for about 2 weeks, then naturally became dry on her own. I think as she got bigger, the cage didn't seem so big and she didn't like going in her sleeping area!
Harley wasn't even house trained when we got her. She had spent the first 7 weeks of her life outside in a kennel where they soiled and wet in the rear of the kennel.
    Good luck
Ternaya and Harley (15 weeks old)

Hi Emma, most puppies only need to go out once during the night, say between 2 and 3 am. The most common reason for soiling in the crate is the crate being too big. This is the biggest a crate should be.

Thanks, yes I think the crate is probably too big comparing it to your one. I will pop to the shops and purchase a new one!

Hi Emma, I should probably qualify my statement by adding 'relative to the size of the dog'...:) You may be able to buy a divider, to make your crate smaller temporarily. Worth checking out before forking out for a new crate.

Thanks Pippa, I looked at dividers but they were more expensive than a smaller crate. I posted on Facebook however and I have had an offer of a smaller one from a friend so I will try that out. Thanks for your advice. :)
