Hi I have a gorgeous dog pies who is nearly 13 weeks old.
He seems to be having softer poos on his food now, we have been to the vets and he is absolutely fine really good condition but his food just isn’t agreeing with his little belly.
Can anyone recommend some food for sensitive stomachs?

    Thank you :)

    Hi Teide,
Sorry to hear Pies is having an issue with his food!

What are you currently feeding him? Before switching look at how much he is eating and drinking during the day as over fed and over hydrating can cause soft poos.

Thanks for your reply lovely :)
I will check his food brand and let you know as I’m just getting ready for work but we are feeding him 100g 3x daily with the middle meal halved for training and kongs which was ok’d by the vet as he’s growing I also went from the recommended amounts on this site..

Perhaps I should lower it to 70-80g and see if that makes a difference?
He’s currently having some of his meals cut down and rice added to see if we can control his tummy which is what the vet suggested but if I can fix the issue by cutting down his portion size then it’s worth a shot!

    Poor little guy!

    :)

We used the feeding recommendation as a guideline as Luna is a hungry wee girl but also isn't fat so she must just be burning more and needing it. We are on Simpsons Premium 80/20 Puppy and tend to feed the following.
Breakfast - 102g soaked with 50ml of water and mixed so its like a thick gravy
Morning Snack - puppy peanut butter with banana and maybe some carrot
Lunch - mix of salmon and kibble (soaked) 102g
    Afternoon - carrot/watermelon
Dinner - mix of salmon and kibble (soaked) 102g
Supper - scrambled egg with handful of kibble

So she is on more than she should be but is healthy and good poos.

She was over hydrated for a while so had to cut down the amount of water added to her food as we used to have it at 80ml water.

Also might be worth looking at what treats you are using as some treats are full of fillers.

Oh ok fab! It’s nice to see what others are feeding their pups too! That’s interesting! Maybe worth using less water as well because we do use water with his kibble!

The food we are using is called step up to nature up to 1 year.
We only use his kibble for treats very rarely do we use cheese but as his kibble is softened he think the dry kibble are the best haha!

for snacks he has kongs filled with watered down kibble and sometimes peas sealed with puppy peanut butter and his mat with peanut butter but we swap them around every few days so he is having something different to play with / keep him occupied.

I think I will try reducing his food slightly and the water we use to see if it helps!
I’ve heard natural yogurt is good to help with belly is that right?
Thank you so much for your reply :) hope Luna is doing well!!

Luna can't have cheese as doesn't agree with her, we got these treats from Amazon and she absolutely loves them! We use these as high reward as we also use her kibble.

Just had a quick look on 'all about dog food' and notice that that one isn't high in protein which can mean it is grains and wheat, this can be what is upsetting his tummy.

Sorry never heard about natural yogurt, it is normally chicken and rice they are put on to settle a tummy.

It is such a learning curve out there, we have learned so much in the last 10 weeks and still so much to learn!

She is doing great thanks, we had her at a field at the weekend with her mum, dad and 4 of her siblings. Was amazing seeing them all running around together!

Meant to say Luna is now 4 months so the amount of food is based on her age. Pies is slightly younger than her (she was born 11th June)

Sorry just seen you said Pies is 13 weeks. At this age Luna was only on about 75-80g 3x a day.

I feed poppy Wellness core large breed puppy food. You can get it on amazon and fetch.com (if you’re in the UK). It has a good rating for nutrition and she thrives on it. Her coat is so shiny and the vet said she is in perfect health! For training treats we use boiled turkey and she gets a raw egg mixed into her food once a week and sometimes some sardines :)

Figuring out a puppy's food intolerances is tricky. Mine went thru a very bad stretch but with food item removal (note we raw feed) and reintroduction we discovered it was chicken. Oddly enough ground turkey is not a problem.

2 things I want to point out in this thread: 1) be careful your peanut butter does not contain Xylitol. Bad news. 2) never feed your dog raw salmon. Better to use salmon oil instead.

    Hi AlphaDog,
The peanut butter we use is specifically for dogs (a bit more expensive but worth it) and we always cook the salmon for out pup and if shes been good she gets some crispy skin too.

Cooked or frozen salmon is fine from a parasites point of viewu. I personally avoid feeding a lot of big fish as they accumulate heavy metals. Sprats are cheap in Morrison's at the moment - Loki has a few every day as part of his raw meals.

Hi Christina sorry for the delayed reply haven’t had 5 mins to get round too it haha!
He’s back in chicken and rice until Monday when his new food arrives we’ve gone for the Simpson’s 80/20 sensitive food in the hopes this will be much better for him!
I suppose it’s been a learning curve for me and I didn’t do research into the food we have had him on! Which was my mistake!
We know it’s his food as soon as he was back on it his belly was bad again so fingers crossed this new food will be good for him :) hope you and Luna are well! I can’t believe how the time flies! Pies is 14 weeks on Tuesday it’s just flown by!

Oh wow that’s fab!! Pies is in perfect health too the vet said :) bar his bad tummy! But they weren’t concerned they just said sometimes it happens and he’s probably just got a really sensitive tummy!! As the food the breeder had him on when we got him also gave him a bad belly! Poor little guy :)

Don't worry about it, I know the feeling!
I hope he enjoys it and it is okay for his belly. Luna loves it.

We have been through such a learning experience too. We researched the food as we wanted to get the best we could in our budget but to start with we never had the right treats so was counter productive.

Luna has taken a step back in terms of biting, she is only going for me and man it hurts so bad! We are really trying to home in on her triggers and try to avoid them. She doesn't bite my husband at all and she won't touch me when he is there. We think its because she sees me a 'play time'.

Time goes sooooo quick! Luna is 19 weeks tomorrow

Hi Teide and Pies. Seems to be quite a common issue with labs. Just a out every lab I know is sensitive to something yet they can eat all-sorts of rubbish they pick up on walks. Our 5 month had serious squidgy poop issues on cereal based kibble and vet suggested hypoallergenic grain free. So we tried AVA large breed puppy. It's specially formulated for larger breeds. His stomach settled very quickly. In his Kong's and Likimats I use different mixes of crushed kibble from his daily allowance, wet puppy food in jelly(chicken and rice), pureed carrot, butternut squash, pumpkin, 0 percent natural Greek yoghurt, tiny stopper of doggy peanut butter, tinned sardines, and home made bone broth ice cubes. I vary what he has in each so that he doesn't overload on any one thing in a day and I always freeze them. We have now been 10 weeks runny poop free so seems to work and he loves his food. I always adjust kibble feeds to allow for calories. Think it may be s case of finding a starting point and then introducing other bits gradually to send what happens

We’ve had our Hector a week now and he still has runny poos he will be 11 weeks old on Tuesday. We’re using the same food as the breeder used and recommended but we’re wondering if we should change brands. Any suggestions welcome thank you.

    Hi Happy Hector,
I would recommend having a look on all about dog food and see what the nutritional value of the food you are using. It could be that there is grains/fillers in the food that is upsetting his stomach.

Before you switch though it is worth seeing how much he is eating/drinking as too much can cause soft poos.
It could also be that he is just adjusting to the new house and being without his siblings.
