This may seem strange to some. I have a 2 1/2 year old black lab. I am 73 years old . I am in good health as well as my lab . I am trying to plan ahead for her care if something were to happen to me. I don't have any one that could take her. I want her to be in a good family home. I am trying to find out information as to what I can set up for her. I would put some money aside for help with her care. She is a very good girl. Loves to be hugged and shown love. I am just trying to provide a good home for her, if something should happen to me. Does anyone know of any information on this issue. I love her very much and would feel better knowing that I provide for her.

Doesn't sound strange at all, rather this is part of being a responsible dog owner. Since dogs are property (shocking I know) we were advised to put a pet clause in our wills so in the event of our death, our dogs are given to a trusted and loved trainer. The trainer has the option to keep the dogs or find good homes for them. A sum of money is set aside for her to use for care and feeding. We trust her judgment and she has experience with re-homing dogs.

You might first look at your dog's sales contract to see if the breeder would take her. If there is no explicit statement, and you trust the breeder, you might raise the possibility. Another option would be to nominate a trusted friend or family member who would find a loving home. You could also ask for suggestions from national animal shelter(s).

Caveat: law may be different in the UK so consult with your solicitor.

I think you might be in the USA (mom / mum) but in the UK there is a charity called the Cinnamon Trust who you can contact and arrange to take care of your dog should you die. They are an excellent body which finds foster homes for these dogs and the charity makes sure it is a good home and pays for the any vet treatment the dog may need,
