Hi All, Huey our gorgeous black lab is 4.5 months old I grew up with a Labrador but he is our first puppy. For the last 3 days he has been under the weather sorry for the long post but thought it might help with some background, in short is google right that puppies can be sick and have upset tummies from teething? We have been changing over his food from Eukanuba large breed puppy to Acana I did this slowly over 2 weeks with the puppy/junior Acana and he was fine started the large breed once it had been delivered on Sunday so he had 7 meals before he was sick. I spent ages checking the ingredients the same ingredients except for glucosamine and chrondrotin in the large breed feed. I’m wondering if this made him sick but it would be odd if it did given how we’ve slowly changed over and wondering if it’s his teeth? He lost his first two from the front on Monday.

It started on Tuesday he was sick in the afternoon wouldn’t usually think anything of it with one sick episode but he was heaving about an hour later and quite lethargic so we went to the vets he had a ranitidine injection and some vet pro, temp normal. Vet thinks it’s something he’s picked up from a stone or stick (which he’s always putting in his mouth and I’m getting him to drop/taking off as quickly as I can!). Wednesday wouldn’t eat breakfast fed boiled chicken and rice little and often he wasn’t sick at all and gobbled up drinking and wee as normal, normal poop am but diarrhoea once in the afternoon, no sick on Wednesday, buts of play but he slept a lot. Today much brighter wanted to play, never been so happy that he was puppy snapping at me again we went on a short walk this am he was great and zoomies in the garden. He had 3 small lots of chicken and rice with a handful of kibble and ate those but has not touched the chicken or rice since and refused to eat 2 further meals he had another episode of diarrhoea about 5pm then had only a small handful of his old kibble (Eukanuba large breed puppy) as he was interested in that but would not eat his the Acana out of my hand piece by piece. He took some chicken out of his bowl and barked at it and same with his kibble. He’s played and slept this evening had a couple of ice cubes for his teeth. Slept for an hour woke up and was sick played afterwards now snoozing again. We are going to the vets again tomorrow for a check up to check nothing sinister as I’m concerned this is day 3 where he hasn’t eaten his full allowance of food only small bits and he’s still so young. Would love to hear if anyone else had this with their pup when they were teething/if it could be teething and if so what you did with your pup? We give him ice and chew toys and frozen damp tea towels to help his teeth would welcome any other ideas and ways to settle his tummy if it is teething. Thank you in advance.

I'm sorry to hear he's been unwell :(

Although I'm aware a lot of people say teething causes stomach upsets, it's not something i've ever personally experienced with my dogs (or kids!). I've also not come across any studies that show a correlation :)

You can read all about common puppy teething issues here.

It sounds like you are doing the right thing following your vet's advice and going back for a check up again. Hopefully whatever it is will pass soon and he'll be back to normal.

Do let us know how he gets along!
