It seems like very few people here (Toronto) are actually familiar with English Labs - they seem to expect a Lab to be taller and leaner, and also much more energetic. George is the opposite of all of those things, so I guess we're just confusing!

I think that might be it as Oban is also bench bred (with English, U.S. and Canadian antecedents) and at 31 kg (67.7 pounds) his last Vet visit is just about smack in the middle of the weight stated in our CKC standard. People think Oban is small too, or not purebred, or a puppy. He is lean and still bouncy (at 9 years old) so he is taken for a puppy lots of times. :)

    Height/Weight

Dogs will stand from 22.5-24.5 in (57-62 cm) at the shoulder and weigh 60-75 lb (27-34 kg). Females are slightly smaller at 21.5-23.5 in (55-60 cm) and 55-70 lb (25-31.5 kg).

    From: https://www.ckc.ca/en/Choosing-a-Dog/Choosing-a-Breed/Sporting-Dogs/Retriever-Labrador

You can see George is just under the weight for the standard. But it's a wonky standard, IMO. The weight is supposed to be in working condition, which the above, right from the CKC, does not state. The Labrador Owners Club sets the standard and it says that. And no one ever, as far as I know, has defined what working condition is, or has measured the weight while a dog is in this condition.

Rmember too, the U.S. and the UK have different standards than we do in Canada. The UK doesn't state weight and likes lower heights.

I've always wondered why your name here is akc? Does it refer to American Kennel Club? George is even smaller by the AKC standard which uses the same heights we do but higher weights. However the AKC standard also has the wonky "working condition" which isn't any better explained or used there either, I think.

ETA: Oh, and Oban is 23 inches (58.42 cm) at his withers.

I realized this after I set up my account but it has nothing to do with the club -- just my initials!

LOL, I have a T-shirt with my initials on it that I quite like. It's from a large Canadian dept. store chain and celebrates one of their brands, which just happens to have the same initials as me. Even better, the T-shirt wasn't selling well so I got for a whopping $3.00. :)

There are some definite benefits to having a "smaller" (whatever that means) lab.

Murphy is almost 3 now. He is weighing in at 45 kg. Not overweight in the least. Murphy is a total moosh. He can jump up on his platform in the backyard no problem, but when it comes to the car? No, no, no. Have to hoist him in there. Sheesh.

And then. . . . Murphy loves the vets office. Great place to meet people, say hi to their cats, other dogs, a regular corner pub in his opinion. When it is time to go he sometimes just sits down, then lays down. Now what? Can't drag 100 lbs of lab across the floor.....I just drop the leash and head for the door. That does it.

I take him over to the vet about once a month to get his nails done. He just loves the girls. He lays down, rolls on his side and says "have your way with me....." All I have to do is say "Let's go see the girls!" and he is ready to go. What a guy.

Later, I am going to post about "Murphy's Excellent Adventure" a few weeks ago.

Who cares what a dog weighs???? Especially a lab!

Xena at 15 months is a petite wee thing. Last time I measured her she was 53 or 54 cms at the withers, but she's very short in the body. And she's only 21kg and I don't see her getting much bigger! She had her annual vet check yesterday with a young vet who's never seen her before. He said "she could probably do with an extra kilo, but that's probably only because I'm not used to seeing slim Labs" ha ha. I think she looks smashing, but as I've mentioned elsewhere I'm bloody sick of the "she's not a purebred/pedigree/what's she crossed with" questions!

I am, too! But I think Xena looks lovely, from what I can see in your picture. Looks very similar to George, so I may be biased ;)

Libby is also 21kg and very lean. The vet says she is the fittest lab he's seen in a long time. She's 49cm at 14 months. Still managed to cause me a massive injury though!!

Tilly is about 21" at the withers, which puts her below the US breed standard. She is a mix of field and show stock, but looks like an English (Show) stock lab. She weighs about 29kg. She is shorter than the typical lab we see and a little lighter.

Cooper is just the opposite. 63 cm and 36kg. Tall and skinny, she looks very much like a typical American field style Lab.

First off, I had to look up the word "withers". Fun word I'd never seen before. Second, I must have a taller english lab because mine is 67 cm (26.5 in) tall at his withers. Weighed him today at the vet and he's almost 34 kg (74 lbs).

I haven't measured Honey, but she is definitely small. She weighs just under 54 lbs. (Now I'm curious so will measure her tonight :) )

Just measured my little cutie - about 52cm and 21.8 kg (48 lbs). She still has a relatively small head and small feet (but proportionate to her body) so I'm not sure how much bigger she'll actually get. Coming up to 10 months next week.

yes! I have a 5 month old lab and he is only 25 pounds. Everyone keeps telling us he's mixed or "somethings not right" or "maybe the breeder lied about his age"... I think he's just small! He is a great pup and has a fantastic personality. He has all the other lab characteristics.

My Labrador is 3 months in and she only weighs 9.5 lbs, people are asking me if she's pure, they say that she should be weighing 3x of that she is now

Hello, we got our now 31 week old bench lab puppy at 25 weeks. All our previous labs were filed labs, so we have no experience with a bench lab. Our puppy appears small and not very long. At 31 weeks he stands 49.5 cm at the withers and weighs 23.5 kg which is about the same as when he was 25 weeks. Our Vet says he is healthy. He plays all day long with our older lab, has a healthy appetite. He looks and acts like a puppy, just not very long and tall.
Thank you in advance for any insight.

Monty is 24.2kg at 10 months... we're expecting him to bulk out before he's 18 months. He's a working lab and very lean and leggy. He can still pull me over on the lead if there's something he wants to get to though...
