My 8 yr old lab has been experiencing seizures and the vet is suggesting phenobarbital. I am terrified of the side effects and want to know if anyone has any information to share regarding medication experience as a dog is adjustment to meds?
My dog Sam is 10 and has had epilepsy since he was two. He is on phenobarbital as well as 3 other drugs to control his seizures. Your dog will probably be a little stubbly at first but will adjust to the medication. Additionally, you will need to test liver values periodically but with that being said it is important that you start your dog on an anti seizure drug if that is what is being recommended as the seizures will become worse with time and can become life threatening if not treated. Sam first started on phenobarbital more than 8 years ago and is still happy and healthy. Good luck!
I would highly recommend investigating a ketogenic diet for dogs experiencing seizures or epilepsy. In humans this is effective enough in many cases to ensure that medication is not needed and can be reduced and/or stopped. (Obviously under vet guidance.) The ketogenic diet was first developed in 1924 expressly for humans with seizures and has since been found to have many other health benefits. You might like to join the KetoPet Sanctuary Facebook group and also check out their website: ketopetsanctuary.com You will find many references to cancer - but that's because cancer is another application for the diet and more common than seizure disorders. Do some googling into it...
