Last night our 5-year-old chocolate lab Charlie had some kind of episode.

He was trying to stand/walk and couldn't, he kept falling backwards. He also released fluids from his anal glands. He looked scared and was panicking a lot.

I managed to help him downstairs and outside for a toilet break, hoping that would help or at least spare our carpet from any further mess. Afterwards, he seemed better but was a still bit off.

Has anyone experienced something like this before?

I am wondering if it was a seizure. Sounds an awful lot like what my dog does right after a seizure either a partial or tonic seizure. Scary I am sure. I would watch your dog for future episodes and contact your vet if you see any additional activity. Keep a log of time of day or night and the behavior. This info log will be helpful to your vet. Best of luck to you!

You are very welcome. Fingers and paws crossed that this episode was the first and last! Good health to you and your pup!
