How do you tell if a Samoyed is overweight? We dog sit a Sammy for a friend, and he has so much fur that I have no idea what his body shape is. He looks like a butter ball, but it is mostly fur. Still I can't tell if he has a waist or not.

Could you take him swimming? A wet dog looks closer to it’s true size. We have friends with a Bernese that has a really thick coat. He is definitely overweight. I think if you are questioning whether he is he probably is.

Sammies (at least the ones I've been around) don't swim, though they do wade. This dogs coat is so thick that even wet it is a couple of inches thick. He is not like a Rough Collie or even a Malamute. I'm going to try getting him on our package scale. Cooper will sit on it, because we started out weighing her when she was 7 weeks old and did it about every few days as she was growing up. At some point the Samoyed's owner will get him into his vet and get him weighed, but she has not had time to do it recently.
