Hello, we have a 4.5 year old lab that was just recently become very stubborn whilst on his daily walk.. He seems in good health and still looks forward to going out.. But will stop and resist if he does not want to proceed in a certain direction.. has any one experienced this before? His doing this on his normal walking routes, so not new areas..

Has anything scared him? If you can't think of anything, I'd pop him to the vet for a check up.

Hi 5labs, No nothing we can think of.. We were wondering if it could be a change in personality with age, or if spending alot more time with us both at home in the last 3 months..

Hi, i'm having the same issue with our 3-year-old boy. He's happy to go for walks, loves being outside, but being very stubborn when (on the lead) he wants to go in a different direction or, more usually, wants to stop for ages to sniff. He wears a harness and when I try to (gently) tug him in the direction we are going he refuses and will just sit/lie down. Have only noticed this since lockdown. I did try a collar and lead but he refused so hard he keeps pulling out of his collar.

That's really interesting.. sounds exactly the same.. we have decided to go back to some positive reinforcement.. with some treats on his walks.. mild improvement over the last few days

Hi i have a two year old lab who has always done this on and off. We've had her checked at the vets in case she was in pain somewhere but vet doesn't think so. I've tried distracting her but no luck, she simply won't move until she's ready! Stressful if I'm in a rush.

She will move if offered a treat but i don't want to do this really because she would be very overweight!I

I am now just waiting when she stops, sits or lays down until she moves on by herself. Good luck

Last year Cooper decided that she did not want to go past the gate to our HOA at our cabin. It is just an arm like you see in car parks, but something about it bothered her. She would go by it coming in, but not going out. We had to drive out, or walk her through the woods around the gate. We got her to go through last spring with her Samoyed buddy, but latter in the year when I tried again it was no-go. I'm sure we will work through it, but I have no idea why she doesn't like this particular gate.

Luna is now 13 months and still does this. Sometimes she just wants to have a wee seat and watch the world or stand and smell the air.
If we are going for a walk and she wants to go a particular way and she doesn't think I am going that way then she will take the lead in her mouth and look up at me with those eyes you can't say no to! Other times she isn't fussed and will just walk ahead of me and keep looking back to make sure I don't change the direction on her and leave her behind (shes attached to the lead I hold so don't know how I could!)
