I’m sure this will have been asked before but I’m looking for some advice. Chester is 10 weeks and is going pretty solidly from 11.30pm to 5.15/5.30 am without a toilet break which i think is fantastic for his age.

The problem we have is once I take him out (no fuss) at 5.30am he won’t go back in his crate. But he will fall back asleep with me on the sofa until I’m ready to get up. He went until 8am this morning! How can I get him to go back in his crate for a few hours? He cries immediately, but he’s had a toilet so should I just let him cry a while? I worry I’ve done it for too long now (5 days or so) and it’s created a routine.

Is your crate right by your bed? If not, put it there. Put him back in the crate and go to bed, with a hand on him through the bars if necessary.

Also, be sure that for the 5.30am toilet trip, you are not responding to his noise - you should be setting the alarm to get up, before he wakes up. Otherwise you will be reinforcing his noise by getting up in response to it... and this can be a hard habit to break.

Thanks for responding! No he’s not in our room anymore. He’s been sleeping in the living room really easily for over a week, all through the night. He slept until 6am today - and I always get up before he wakes. My partner gets up at 6.20ish so if I put him back in the bedroom he’s just going to be up again once my OH gets up!

I might just have to accept that this is the way it’ll be until he sleeps a bit longer. To be honest if he can go 11.30pm to around 6.30am or 7 I’d be happy to get up with him then.

i shouldn’t complain really - we’re so lucky he sleeps as well as does!
