I got my lab when he was 13 weeks old and he was amazing. He’s currently about to be 11 months in 4 days, he goes potty in our backyard he started running away every time we took him outside to use the bathroom a couple months ago. We decided to get him a e-collar and that was working great he never ran away or anything and then it broke so we decided that he didn’t need it anymore. But I’ve noticed that now every time i take him on walks he decides to find a way to run away and if i don’t talk him on walks for a couple of weeks straight he stops running away but I can’t stop taking him on walks because that’s not ideal for a dog. I have a 7 month old baby so it’s getting really hard to deal with this type of behavior and he refuses to use the bathroom on a leash, never uses the bathroom on walks. I don’t know what else to do.

Hi there, it sounds as though you need to train your dog to come when called in a structured way. You'll find some help here in this article. If your dog is straying further and further from you on walks, then you might find the About Turn Walk technique very helpful - check out that link for more information.

If you want your dog to potty on the leash, the best way to get that habit started is at home in the part of your yard or garden that you want him to use for bathroom purposes. Once he'll do this on the leash at home then doing it on leash walks will follow.

Hey, thank you so much I looked into the article and will be trying that. The only time he’s not on a leash is at home and in our backyard which is when he finds the time to runaway. I’ve tried multiple times taking him on a leash in our backyard but he will just hold it until he can’t anymore, he seems to do this when he goes to daycare or anywhere else. Won’t use the bathroom unless it’s at home leashless
