Just adopted a puppy. He is a very calm and sweet little puppy. Takes to training extremely easy. Just had him checked out by our vet. He has hook worm so they put him on a dose of drontal plus. He went from calm and lazy to super hyperactive. Constantly barking in or out of the cage and on high alert. It HAS to be the drontal. Has anyone else experienced this with drontal plus? Please help Thx
Hi maybe he felt poorly with the worms and is now feeling better so more normal typical puppy behaviour, also puppies are nervous at first and now he's more settled with you he's relaxing and being himself,my puppy sounds just like yours!. My dogs have both had drontal for years with no problems.
Hi Bill, like saffy I’ve been using Drontal for years without problems. That’s not to say it doesn’t cause any, pretty much any effective drug will have some side effects. it’s always important to let your vet know if you suspect a reaction to any drug. Not just so they can advise you on your dog, but in order to build a record of how drugs affect different dogs. When something happens to your dog after any medical intervention it’s also important not to assume that the medical intervention was the cause, because doing so can sometimes mask a very different cause and delay or prevent treatment Give your vet a call and describe your pup’s symptoms, especially if they seem to be getting worse - better to be on the safe side especially with such a little one
Maisy had dreadful side effects on Drontal Plus. She was so wound up, could not settle, was obviously tired but when she lay down she had to get up and pace, very uncomfortable and whining. I rang the vet and they acknowledged that this was a known and common side effect to this brand. I only used it once, now I give her Nexgard and Milbemax together with no problem.
We used Drontal Comp (the same as Drontal Plus, but different name for different market) https://www.drugs.com/international/febantel.html . It seems to work well as a wormer (was the vet's recommendation). The only issue we have had is that the boy doesn't like the taste, and we have to hide them in sardines.
Yes! I just experienced it again last night with my 2 year old lab mix. It was just awful. He got both doses after dinner and both times he was wired, couldn't sit , lie down or sleep for hours afterwards. It was miserable for both him and I. I won't use again for him as my other 4 dogs did fine. What a nightmare it was. So yes, I believe you as we experienced the same thing.
Yes we just experienced the hyper activity after giving them drontal plus. I was expecting for them to feel sick but they were running around the yard at full speed and very hyper for 8 hours. They’ve calmed down now but I was very surprised how happy and hyper they were. Like they were on drugs.
I just rescued a pup 2 weeks ago and she has hookworms so my vet prescribed Drontal Plus.. What a nightmare we had last night..hahahahaha!! I didn't know what was happening. .Was the worms gone and this is how she really going to act? My god!!!! My puppy, i mean piranha, was out of control!!! We havent slept all night long..barking, biting, crying, panting, just absolutely crazy! I'm glad I found this forum and now know its a side effect of the meds...I want my sweet puppy back...
What is the best for a 2.5 months old lab puppy? Drontal or Drontal + or are there any other medicine??
