I have an intact male, 20 months, whose urine has a very strong smell. I've never had an intact male past 10 months, so this is new territory for me. He doesn't pee on himself, but the kennel where he pees smells very strongly of urine. I also have a spayed female and another neutered male, but there was never a kennel urine smell until this guy arrived as a puppy and grew up a bit. I've used enzyme cleaners on the kennel (pea gravel on dirt), but that hasn't helped much. He has no symptoms at all of health issues, like a UTI. He drinks lots of water and eats normally.

I assume the cause is the hormones from being intact. I don't want to neuter him, but would like ideas of how to deal with the urine stink in the kennel. Are there safe things I can add to his food to minimize the smell?

Does he have to urinate in the kennel? Could you not take him out regularly to wee somewhere you can hose down?

I started that this morning, directing them to the far edge of the grass, where the pasture begins. I was trying to avoid that because it means I have to be outside with the dogs, rather than snug in the house while they do their business in the kennel. Going into winter in Minnesota also means any "hosing down" will have to wait till spring! We live on 10 acres way out in the country, and I can't just let them out on their own, unchaperoned, in case they decide to take a walk by themselves. I worry about the coyotes... However, it may be the only real solution to the urine smell! I'll try it for a few weeks and see what happens.
