Has anyone used CBD oil for pain relief or to help mitigate seizures? What results did you see, if any and were there any side effects?
Yes, I have used it in my elderly Weim with cancer. We were managing her pain but she was on many meds and supplements and I don't know what was attributable to what. There is a good FB group on CBD oil and which one to get etc, here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/cbdoilforpets/
I don't have experience of CBD for seizures, but I tried a chewable CBD gummies treat for my dog who gets anxious in high winds and/or things hitting the roof (I live in a 100 year old forest) and it helped him a great deal because it made him sleepy and so he just napped through it all. But I have heard that CBD workes fine for seizures for both people and animals
CBD oil is a therapeutic oil with a non-psychoactive compound of cannabis: cannabidiol or CBD. CBD has grown in popularity for a number of health conditions in humans. Its recent legalization in many countries sparked a keen interest in dog owners. They normally seek an alternative remedy for their dog’s. Although the research on its effects on dogs is scarce, several CBD oil products have been formulated specifically for dogs (mainly liquid tinctures, tablets, chews, and treats). In fact, over 50% of vets recommend and prescribe them based on experience. CBD reduced seizures caused by electric shocks and drugs in old studies in mice and is even approved for some types of epilepsy in humans. In the only clinical trial in epileptic dogs, infused CBD oil reduced seizure frequency slightly better than the placebo. The therapy was most effective when blood CBD reached high levels. Thus, we’re in need of a method that can accurately measure CBD blood levels to allow dosage adjustment. On the other hand, CBD oil safely reduces seizures in people with some types of epilepsy. It helps both children and adults who don’t respond to anti-seizure drugs. CBD oil might work in a similar way for dogs with seizures, and anecdotal reports back this up. However, more trials are needed to confirm its effectiveness and establish its therapeutic use. Consult your vet if you plan to give your dog with that and oil for seizures. CBD oil is often given to dogs with painful and inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, back pain, and terminal cancer. CBD probably improves these conditions by blocking the production of pro inflammatory cytokines and increasing those with anti-inflammatory effects. In the only clinical trial in dogs, oral CBD oil reduced arthritic pain but had no effect on limb mobility or weight-bearing capacity.
I give Molly cbd for epilepsy, and she had it after her spay for pain management. I also changed her diet and avoid known/possible seizure triggers. The AKC health foundation has been doing a study on cbd for epilepsy and other conditions for awhile now.
My older dog has epilepsy and is on four different AED’s to help control his seizures. His neurologist at Cornell did not recommend CBD oil as they were concerned about possible interaction with his other meds. Good luck with your pup!
