We recently adopted a 1 year old yellow lab. He's been with us for 4 weeks. He has a nice, large back yard where he loved to run and play. He recently discovered the rain gutter on the back of the house. The gutter is attached to corrugated pipe that takes the water away from the house. Now, he is obsessed with the gutter and barks and attacks it constantly. It is almost impossible to get him away from it. He will not do his business or play. I built a fence around it and he got stuck crawling under the fence trying to attack the gutter. I'm at my witts end. How do I keep him from being obsessed with this gutter?

He goes on walks at least 2 times a day, he has different types of chew toys, balls, etc that we play with inside. He would run and chase sticks and frisbee in the back yard until he found the gutter. While he's at rest or playing, he is a very good dog. He just gets into trance when he starts attacking the gutter.

Have you tried training a positive 'leave that' command?

Just a thought but is it possible it is not the gutter per say but rats or mice that like to live in gutters?

We thought about that too. I took the gutter apart from the underground pipe and it was clear. It's hard to say if he hears something or smells something but we have had a lot of rain recently so anything should have been washed out.

He completely ignores my presence or voice commands. Or he gets more agitated when I come near him while he is in this state.
