Having read several of Pippa's articles I now realise that my super obedient puppy at 5 months wasn't as well trained as I thought and it's not becase my dog is now a "teenager" that he is deliberately defying me. I’ve also realised I’ve been bribing more than rewarding despite having bought Pippa’s puppy book. I think I was doing OK at first and then slipped into bribing as the situations became more complex and my puppy got older. Now I have an eight month old labrador who is starting not to sit unless I have a treat and a recall that works every other time and never if there is another dog. Any ideas. Should I change my “sit” command and start again. Or perhaps add in 1 minute tug with rope as an alternate reward? How to break the 4 month bribery habit eg here's a treat come here and give me my shoe back or look at the treat now "sit". Also until 4 months I used the clicker – just tried to start using it again and the dog is terrified of it and jumps around even weeing… HELP I really don't know what to do and we are struggling to cope with our very big lab. Is it possible for you to attend a force free dog training class? I think a teacher who directly observes what you are doing is required here. You have read the books and unfortunately you have not implemented successfully the principles. So, direct mentoring seems to be the desired route.
