    Hi there,

Where I am, neutering is common and required by breeders almost always, including ours. It's also pretty much expected at the off-leash park and by dog walkers/boarders. Fortunately our vet is encoring us to wait as long as possible, so we will try to go to 18 months. My questions is, what are the challenges specific to hormones that may help me figure out what lies ahead to manage things. I am mainly afraid of him running off to find a female, but I hear there are other things to watch out for. I am very comfortable with the idea of waiting. But I not sure what challenges lie ahead in terms of training. My 5 month old is definitely a teenager and it's pretty obvious his hormones are shifting. Also, for any north Americans out there, where neutering is expected by other dog owners, what social issues with other owners or male/female dogs should I expect? Thanks!

I think you're making a wise decision to wait until your dog is physically mature before neutering as there are many health benefits. Also it's nice to hear that your vet is supportive. Ours tried to get us to spay our girl early, not so up to date with current advice. I can't say what challenges you will face as I've only had females but I think many dig owners will understand your decision to wait as most breeders are now recommending this too.

Thank you for this feedback as an owner of a female dog. I particularly worry about people being protective of females.
