So we are trying to nail this house training thing. We take him out very regularly - after every meal, nap and usually every hour. He nearly always pees when we take him out and he is rewarded and fussed over. However, he doesn't seem to give us a signal when he needs to go. He will just stop what he's doing and pee on the floor. We say a firm "no" and lift him outside, but it's not making much of a difference it seems.

He does cry for a poo (he's only had one poop inside since we got him), so not sure why he doesn't do the same for pees! We have the correct cleaning agent to neutralise the odour, so it's not that.

Is this just something that will click as he gets a bit older or is there a way we can teach him to ask out?

He is 10 weeks, so maybe we are expecting too much too soon? However, he can go all night without a pee now, and has done for the past 5 nights!

Hi there, welcome to the forum :)

At 10 weeks old, I'm afraid he doesn't know when he needs to pee yet! It's going to be a few weeks until he recognises the sensation that his bladder is full, and a few weeks more than that before he can recognise that feeling and hold it in until he's in the right place.

Until then, it's up to you to make sure he's in the right place at the right time!

Resist the urge to scold him when he has an accident. He had no control over it happening, but scolding him can make him afraid to pee in your presence. So that when he does start to gain control over his bladder, he might start hiding from you in the house to pee.

The good news is that most Lab-sized dogs mostly become masters of their own bladders by the time they're 16 or 17 weeks old. So hang in there, it won't be long (in the grand scheme of things) :)

Thank you! Will make an effort to be on better alert! He’s been better today and yesterday. I think only one accident yesterday and none so far today. We are just lifting him out the second he starts sniffing about :)
