Hi all. Thanks for welcoming me to the page! It has been a fabulous resource over the past few weeks in preparation for puppy's arrival. We have just picked up our 8 week old yellow lab puppy 4 days ago. We noticed he had a runny nose which seems better now. He has tear staining on both eyes and slight clear discharge from both eyes. Is this normal for a puppy? What should we look out for? Thank you. I can post a photo if that helps. Fiona

    Hi Fiona
Hopefully you will have had it checked by a vet by now if it hasn’t cleared up. He may need antibiotic drops if it is an infection. Have you contacted the breeder to ask?

Hi thanks for replying. He's been checked at the vets twice. They said not entropion but most likely allergy. His eyes still weep a little every day while his nose is runny some days but not others. It's just clear discharge and small amounts. They said just monitor as his eyes are not red or irritated looking. What do you think?

    Hi
If they have ruled out infection then yes sounds like mine with his allergies. The liquid from his eyes is clear when fresh and eyes themselves not red. Apparently one of the most common allergens are dust mites which are in all homes. Sleeping near the floor probably doesn’t help so make sure that area is as dust free as possible. Be careful with him running through long grass at this time of year too.

    Could it just be teething?

Our puppy now 5 months old has the same and has had this for quite a few weeks. It isn't very severe and it seems like quite a common problem most likely as a reaction to grasses. I treat morning and evening with cool boiled salt water and kitchen roll ensuring that I use different water and tissue for each eye.
