Hi all, we have a lovely 5 month old puppy but he seems to be waking earlier and earlier. We’ve never had any problems with his sleep overnight - he tended to go through from 10.30/11-7.30 like clockwork, which was great. Suddenly though he’s started waking at 6 or earlier. He’s been great in the evenings, settling with us in the living room then loves his crate in the kitchen - going in there with no issue when it’s bedtime. Does anyone have any ideas? We would leave him but he barks on and off and we’re in a terraced house...
Hi Liam, Welcome to the forum! This is a common problem, and a generally good solution is the opposite of what you might think...or hope! It's to preempt him for a few days and get up earlier, to get him out of the cycle of waking you You can find details on a method for doing that here: https://dogsnet.com/my-dog-wakes-up-too-early/ Hope it helps! Let us know how you get along
Thanks for the reply Lucy. Much appreciated. It's something we will certainly look into. You are right, we didn't even think but were giving him his breakfast around 15/20 minutes after he had woken rather than making him wait until our time! Good advice and we will have a go!
Its not a big issue. You can change his schedule by delaying his breakfast by 10 to 20 minutes daily in order to come back to the earlier schedule.
It might be because it is getting light much earlier now. If you can find a way to block out the light (hang a blanket at the window for instance) this might do the trick.
