I joined the forum in my attempt to treat a 9 year old dog Alfie who has a history of mast cell tumors.
He has just had had 6 lumps removed and they have been diagnosed as grade 2 and 3.
We are reluctant do do the chemo thing and I have been researching and intend putting him and Fin his 5 year old buddie on the Keto diet promoted by The Keto Pet Sanctuary in the States.
I followed a link to this forum and read an interesting post which outlined a members obvious experience with the diet.
Long post I know but can I ask for any kind words of advise and experience from members.

    Hi Michael
So sorry you find yourself with this horrible disease to deal with.
My situation is different as Toby had a Grade 3 Mitotic 9/10 on his ear at 18 months. You will find his story under Mast Cell Tumour Diagnosis.
Because of his age he had ear removal and chemo. Another 5 months and he will be sign off and we will live in hope it doesn’t reoccur elsewhere.
I have no experience of the Keto diet as when I looked into it it meant getting regular samples from him to see if he was in ketosis. He is a tricky customer and that was never going to happen.Jo Laurens mentioned it when she replied and has followed it herself.
I don’t know if you use Facebook but there are a lot of support groups on there including one for holistic treatment which you may find useful.
You may have also heard of a new treatment called Stelfonta which is injected into the tumour.

Keep posting and let us know how you get on. All the best Julie

    Hi Julie
    Many thanks for your message.
They have had 2 goes at Alfie's ear and it's no more than a 50mm flap at the moment.
I'm trying to revive the dreaded Facebook thing as it's obvious I can't play Ludite whilst this issue and a few others are buzzing about.
I'm fairly confident I can do the blood tests as Alfie is a very compliant chap.
I'm sold on Keto based on info to hand and seek insight on that subject.
I will however check out the alternative you speak of and once again thank you for your reply.
    Kind regards
    Mick

You can have a Facebook account to join groups without going through the whole having “friends” and posting yourself. That is what I do.
Am I right in thinking you aren’t in the U.K?
The most relevant might be “ Pet Parents of mast cell tumour dogs” and “ holistic help for dogs with Mast cell cancer”
There are YouTube videos by Dr Sue cancer vet who is a big advocate of the Stelfonta injection I mentioned and explains what mast cell cancer is in detail.
I hope you have success with the diet it certainly seems to help in humans.

Thanks for the tips, most grateful.
I'll let you know how I or more importantly Alfie gets on.
    I'm UK by the way.

We are 2 weeks into the 2nd stage of the Keto diet and both dogs seem perfectly fine on it.
The testing for blood/sugars and Keto will kick in within 1 week.
My intent is the full regime of tests for Alfie and a bench mark test with Finley the younger dog.
From there on in it wait and see plus consider other measures we can take.
Our main approach is proving successful so far as Alfie is thoroughly enjoying life.
Just wish I had my head round this Keto diet years ago.
When I think of the dogs I've lost and the prospect of longer life on a carb free diet that might have helped them.
It's a wake up call and whilst I know it's early days yet, I'm poised to start being a loud advocate for the diet.
    Good luck out there.

studies have shown that dogs are more resistant to ketosis than people and they are at greater risk for getting pancreatitis. you're only 2 weeks in. come back with an update in 6 months. good luck
