You all have me nervous that I made a mistake- I am getting my lab in August, and from all the posts it seems like I am getting an alligator mixed with a rattlesnake.

My Redbone Coonhound was easily trained. Never chewed anything, never bit anyone. She had perfect recall. I can give 2 hours a day of training and exercise no problems. I am getting a lab because I wanted a hiking and camping and fishing partner; are all labs psychotic puppy nut jobs?

We have had our lab puppy for almost 2 weeks now and yes she is fond of mouthing my hands ears and nose if in reach but only when she is tired and dont find it hard to manage after we have learned the signs for when to not try and play with her. And when she have had her sleep she is just so sweet :) My girlfriend said this morning "i dont think she is nearly as bad as some of the ones i read about on forum" i think its a case of it being a problem if you want it to be and its not a problem if you are willing to just deal with it and remember it should pass soon enough.

None of them are psychotic puppy nut jobs. They all go through a normal developmental stage of teething. In labs this can be more persistent than other breeds. After about 16 weeks, their teeth fall out and as long as you invest time in training, you will end up with the perfect family pet. I think the problems occur when owners are not prepared for this stage. Meg was a very much a crocopup, but she is the most wonderful, intelligent family pet you could wish for. I would do it all again in a heartbeat. Enjoy your new addition.

So encouraging to read this message! Have an 11 week old lab puppy and was definitely not prepared for the biting stage!!! Just joined the community hoping to find advice and tips on the best way to handle it.

Our guys is 22 weeks tomorrow and the biting has been NOTHING like some of the horror stories I read. From day 1 we redirected any nibbling with a toy and if that didn't work, we got up and left the room for a few seconds. He caught on very quickly. I honestly couldn't tell you the last time he attempted to bite/mouth us.
