Hi! My dog’s collar is rubbing off the fur around his neck. He’s been scratching it a lot so I took it off for now, but we live in a city where he really does need to wear a collar at all times (plus he’s an escape artist!). He doesn’t have any sores but there’s a bald strip around his neck. He also is on monthly flea prevention so that shouldn’t be an issue. I was initially worried it was too tight or damp, but I always make sure to remove it when it gets wet, and if I loosen it any more it’ll be able to slide right off. His collar is a 1” flat buckle collar and I only use it for his tags, and the harness for walks. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Effie, welcome to the forum!

I have a whippet who wears one of the extra-wide collars typical on sighthounds, so I'm familiar with this problem!

Try searching for 'rolled leather house collars'. They're just the trick for holding tags but nothing else :)

Incidentally, I also find that the bald patch on my dog's throat is especially pronounced when he's moulting heavily anyway in spring and fall/autumn. Most of the year, the fur there is a little shorter/thinner, but not as dramatically so. I don't know if this kind of seasonal variation is common!

I have the collar loose thinking that’s more comfortable for him. I can put two fingers between the collar and his neck with a little extra room. I walk him with a harness so there’s rare any force on his collar as well.
