I have a 17 month old spayed female black lab who has been having reoccurring utis. The first was about 4 months ago and she was put on antibiotics. Then about a month later she got another one. I kind of had a feeling the second one was caused by the first not being completely resolved, but the vet wanted to put her on a prescription diet anyway. She had a follow up urinalysis about a week after completing antibiotics and it was all clear, no crystals, no bacteria, good ph. Now, after 2+ months of being on the prescription diet (Hills c/d), I’ve noticed the past few days more frequent urinating and I’m convinced she’s getting another infection. Has anyone ever experienced this before, continued urinary issues while on the prescription diet?
Hello, I doubt a prescription diet would make any difference as a UTI is a bacterial infection. I think prescription diets can be a bit if a marketing gimmick, particularly if you buy it from a vet. They do help with renal disease, but your dog does not appear to have this. UTI’s in spayed dogs can be due to a hormonal imbalance, particularly if they have had their ovaries removed. I would go back and chat to your vet. Best wishes.
We had/have the same issue with our girl. It is my understanding (after lots of research) that can be a common result of early spays in larger breeds (Labs, specifically). We consulted with an internal medicine specialist and surgeon to explore options. We were concerned about surgical complications/healing in that area. We have had good success with using Malacetic wipes weekly. Tutuapp 9Apps Showbox
