I guess I'm just confused as to how he's getting the chance to eat poop at all. This seems like a problem that is easily corrected. First off, if he's able to get get far enough away on a leash to get poop, then you're walking him wrong. He should be "short leashed" until he learns to walk next to you. It's fine to let him explore, but you should 100% be in control of where he goes. You should be on high alert for poop and just avoid those areas. 192.168.100.1 192.168.1.1
If you think about it the mouth and nasal cavity are connected. It's the smell. But yea pay attention and guide them away.
