Hi all, I am looking for some advice. I have a 10 month old male lab who is mostly a very well behaved boy until I go out. He will bark constantly at my partner or the kids until I come back. He is crate trained and is quite happy being left alone for a couple of hours at a time. Any advice welcome.

    Hi Chris,

They have tried ignoring him, putting him in another room, distractions, verbal discouragement. Its very frustrating as he's otherwise great its the only thing we can't crack.

Hi sorry for the late reply.

It does sound a little like attention seeking behaviour.

The only way I've been able to deal with that is....
When good loads of attention. Not easy depending on the age of your kids.
Ignore the barking. Again not easy especially as it may become worse at first.
The moment they do what you want. I,e shut up. Loads of fusses.
    Repeat.

    Chris

Sounds like you need to go back to early puppy training. Practice leaving him in the crate for a few minutes when you leave him (with others in the house), build up the time you do this. Try doing the same, but leaving him out of the crate. Don't make a fuss when you return, reward quite calm behavior.
