A friend of mine here in Germany has had her two Labradors trained as sniffer dogs for rot in houses ('Schimmelspuerhund'), and now does this as part of her regular work. They were on the telly recently! :)

Amazing aren't they. I think I saw those on Facebook too. We did think about training a 'bed bug' dog but decided we don't get enough bed bug problems in our area to justify the time involved. Would be interesting though.

I had bedbugs in the house a few years ago (brought back by one of the kids from a hostel in Amsterdam, lovely! ), and very difficult and expensive they were to get rid of too. :( There were no dogs available that I know of, but they would have been great I am sure, since we didn't know where the little blighters had spread to…

The tv report is in German, so I don't know if it's of much use me linking it on to here. But I've shared it on my Facebook page, if anyone is interested! :)

Tony (the black lab) was in our training group earlier this year. He's made such super progress!!

You would get full time employment with a bed bug sniffer dog at Heathrow airport. When I was still flying the crew bunk rest area on the aircrafts were like bed bug city!!! ;) :D

Really enjoyed that. Fascinating info about the ability to direct air flow differently from each nostril....

On our morning walk today Pops played with a 'Gebirgsschweisshund' puppy. This is a breed that is used for tracking injured deer and wild boar. They are not very big, about the size of a springer spaniel, but they can track an injured animal for hundreds of meters, sometimes even further, up to a mile. When they find the animal, they keep it on that spot and bark and bark until the hunter can finally catch up with them. Years of training, lots of natural talent, an incredible nose, and a big dose of bravery needed!

Most interesting. Especially about the "smart" nostrils! Just been testing Lady's out. She was dead to the world. Me moves a brace of pheasants into the garden to clean etc. Zooom! Very wide awake dog said "Can I help? Please! Please!" ;D

Good God. Nothing strikes more fear into me than bed bugs.

There was a woman on a TV documentary about a mental hospital in london where one woman had irrational fears about Bed Bugs because they were in her house but she felt they were all over her, in her ears etc. they thought it was irrational that she rather sat in the hall rather than in the flat.

    Nothing irrational about that! <Shudder>
