I just picked up my little Judah last weekend and it he first thing I noticed was he was sooooo tiny (and adorable of course)!!! He was 8 weeks old when I picked him up on Saturday (says the paperwork) but I have been thinking there is just no way.

We had our first visit to the vet today and I was totally expecting the vet to confirm my thoughts, but she didn’t blink an eye. She said he was def on the small side but within range for an 8 week old lab pup…… he weighed in at a whopping 4.8 lbs!

Anyways I love the little guy already and we are making strides with the crate training and better looking poops only 4 days in so life is already getting better….. but come on now. Can he really be 8.5 weeks old at 4.8 lbs?! (2.2 kgs for all y’all across the pond)

Hi Liam and Judah, welcome to the forum :)

4.8lbs would certainly make him an outlier, but I don't think it's impossible. We've got a thread here where we invite our members to record their puppy's weight as they grow, and an article here where you can see some of that data plotted on a growth chart, which might be of interest to you.

Out of interest, what was his size like compared to the rest of the litter?

Yeah I saw that thread! Very impressive chain going! I read through some pages and I wasn’t seeing many that low which just added to my astonishment.

man’s to answer the question about the other pups, I did not get to see them all as he was brought out from a back room. They did however bring out one other pup that was also very similar in size if I remember correctly because that was my first thought when I saw her too! (Turns out the breeders young son grabbed a female first on accident). Maybe there were two runts and he just grabbed one of the small ones lol

Also there were only 2 boys in the litter and I was second in line so I didn’t have a pick which would also make sense if he was a runt if people prefer big puppies.

But regardless, I wouldn’t change a thing and I’m just going to accept him being true to age to what the papers say and watch him grow into whatever size he was meant to be! He’s the sweetest little fella!

My Sophie was 7 lbs at 7 weeks and her mom is small - 50 lbs. when Sophie was 10 weeks, I took her to puppy classes and there was a yellow lab there who was exact same age and I’m not joking he was TWICE her size. Even now at 8 months she’s only 45 lbs and growing slowly now so I think she’s gonna be on the small size. I bet your little one is super cute that small!
