So I have started to teach my dog to have some patience and impulse control mainly with food. I usually have my dog sit while i get his bowl ready and I usually have a wait for a couple seconds in a sit position before I tell him to eat but it still isn’t enough he’ll knock me down and run around while I’m trying to do all that. Lately I’ve had him wait till he’s calmed down during meal time before he eats and he has started that if i make him wait too long on his time he’ll start whining and decides to just get up and go to the food without permission I don’t let him but I need some more tips because I don’t know what else to do. He also spends time in his crate if I’m not around to watch him in the room because he has a chewing problem and will chew everything, and when i let him out of the crate he’ll just run and basically throw himself down the stairs from excitement i try to make him wait in his crate before i tell him to go but it’s still not enough

How old is he ? What do you do for exercise or training. Sounds like he has has some mental and physical energy to burn ?

Are you using a hand signal when you tell him to wait? My pup has challenging impulse control still at 8 months but she was a nightmare at 8-12 weeks. My dog trainer had me put my hand out like a stop sign and keep it there until she learned and that was a huge game changer. I don’t need the hand signal for food or at the door - she knows the wait command now, but in new situations like getting out of the car, etc I have to use the hand signal with the command.
