This question sounds really stupid reading it back, but how do you stop harnesses and halti's from stinking?

They turn absolutely rank, absorbing coat oils. Ours is stinking out our hall and coats. You can't pop them in the washing machine because of all the metal parts. We've tried soaking in warm water and washing power but it doesn't seem to get rid of the smell, which then returns twice as strong. Don't really want to put it in any chemicals like bleach for obvious reasons. Going to buy a few more so we can alternate them, but any cleaning tips?

Would a biological washing powder have a better effect maybe? Could they go in the washing machine inside a cushion cover to stop the metal bits bashing on the door or something similar. SOmething a bit padded, so thicker than a pillow case, but something you can zip closed (coz these thigs always come out once you can't open the washer door!

Tried it already, result was a pillow case which had to be washed again separately. Harness came out of that too.

Haven t really got anything we can zip up. Just wondering if anyone had some magical tips, like bicarbonate or vinegar soak ... or something.
I don't wanna weaken canvass of the harness either. It's a really gross smell, 100 times worse than wet dog.

I wash slip leads and ID collars in a bag designed for delicate stuff. Similar to one that you can see on John Lewis site "John Lewis Hosiery Wash Bag". The collars I have are fabric with plastic clips though.

The only other thing I can think of is a hot soak in vanish oxi action - that gets most things out of most things without damage.

I put everything in the washing machine, metal clips and all, it seems to cope well despite clanging as it goes round :D

No, on a 30 or 40c! I usually wash them when washing the dog beds, doing them altogether, still get clanking though :D Doesn't seem to matter, been doing it for years :D

I put mine in the machine mostly after bath - particularly if fox poo is involved. Usually chuck collar and slip lead in with the soggy towels. Or just rinse in the sink. I use doggy shampoo or biological washing powder depending on stink level. Must admit I don't even take the tags off

All of our dogs collars and leads go in the washing machine, especially barley's collar as it gets very smelly, and puzzle's collar gets very muddy. They all get put in a bag and washed, their beds get a wash at the same time as well. At least once a month

Popped it in the machine with other things. Seems okay (a part from the odd clanking scraping sounds lol). My wife usually does the washing, and was laughing at this post ... but I don't want to break the machine !?

It was a cheap pets at home variety harness with metal clips and rings, have purchased better one with tough plastic instead now.
