Hello, at the moment I am training my dogs recall with help of the book Total Recall, recommended on this website. I bought the acme whistle but I am not sure about how to use it. When I blow the whistle almost no sound is made, just a lot of false wind. I am not sure if this whistle is broken or is it supposed to be like this? Do I just need to get accustomed to it?

Hi Doggo, I'm not sure what you mean by the sound of false wind. it should be very loud when you blow hard. Search for cracks. It should be possible to read the number on the whistle. I mean no offence. I am assuming you're blowing into the correct end.

Hahahah yes I am blowing into the correct end ;-). With false wind I mean that particular sound when you blow really hard while the “sound hole” of the whistle is covered. You just hear your own blowing. But the point is of course that I am not covering the whistle so it shouldn’t be that way. Number on the whistle says 212. I know it’s not the one recommended in the book but I thought it should work just fine.. was I wrong? Haha

It sounds as if there's a problem with your whistle as I have Acme ones and they sound loud!

I plan on recall training my new puppy with a whistle. Mostly for when we’re outside at dog parks and what not. I don’t want a loud whistle as I feel like that will quickly get annoying to other dog owners and myself.

It's possible to blow softly. You might be surprised. Other individuals might ask you how to train using a whistle. You might not be annoying at all.

Acme 210 1/2 is slightly more subtle than a 212. Any of them can be blow quietly.

When I got my acme whistle I was convinced it was broken
Found for the first while I had to use sharp string whistles and almost break it in
It’s fine now so either it’s broken in or I blow differently
