I have noticed that during the heavy shedding times, our labs often shed tufts of fur, almost all from the rear hips or flanks. Cooper does not like being brushed, so we probably see more loose hair than most folks, but I recall that Tilly and Ginger did the same thing. It is not excessive shedding, and it doesn't leave bare spots, but I will see tufts of hair mostly on her flanks, and some times tail. I seldom see tufts on her sides or back. It's almost like the hair migrates from the front to the back.

Any thoughts about why there are tufts and why they are towards the rear end.

Hi! I have no idea why they occur, but they do! Our last lab (yellow) had this exact trait. My kids called them “pickies” and would gently pull them out - big tufts. When I brushed her out back I would get so much fluff out of her and mostly from her flanks. In the springtime I would watch little birds fly in to where I left the piles and pick some up in their beaks and fly off to feather their nests. Our current lab (black) does not shed like this at all. She sheds but we don’t get the big tufts. I don’t think I do anything differently. Same food, same brushing routine. No baths except some hose-downs after swimming. Both of my labs come from the same breeder/lines.

Are you dog(s) bench or field lines. Ours have all been field, though Cooper's coat is much different than Tilly's. Tilly had a shorter thicker coat, that was fairly soft. Cooper has a longer, harsh guard coat.

My labs are from bench lines. Both have similar double coat. I did think of one thing I do differently with my current girl - salmon oil on her food. I doubt that has much to do with it, though.
