Hey all, (first time puppy owner)

    I have a 12 wk old fox red/yellow lab from a working/gun dog background.

Thing is, he trumps all day and it reeeeeks!! He likes sleeping under my desk while I work, so you can imagine how fun that is when he lets one off while i'm in a teams meeting!! Also, when he poops you can smell it, like strongly. Is this normal?

We've got him on Skinner's Field & Trial Chicken & Rice Dog Food Puppy which is what he has been on since being weaned and was advised to continue with by the breeder as it's a complete food and wheat and grain free etc. Is this the cause? Or are lab puppies just a bit stinky?

Any advise on what you are feeding your lab pups please is appreciated that's available in the UK.

    Thanks :)

Nope, it's not your pup, its definitely Skinners. It's a low quailty food, full of fillers. Have a look on this comparison website, you will be surprised with it's low rating. Choosing food is a minefield lots of personal preferences. Basically choose the best you can afford. The tool on here lets you compare price and quality. Good luck ! https://www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/

Wow, i'm really surprised the breeder would use something like! Thank you for the advice, really appreciate it. i will definitely look at swapping and slowly introducing a higher quality food for my little guy. Any brands you would personally recommend?

I think a lot use Skinners as it is VAT free and cheap. I have umpteen dogs over the years and been through a few brands. Meg was doing really well on James Wellbeloved, middle of the range food, but over the last year or so it has gone up by over £13 a bag, to £56 which it is not worth. So she is back on Millies Wolfheart, fabulous quality and not so expensive now everything else has gone up. It really suits her, a working black lab. On the website you can compare food by quality and price, choose a few and compare. Its really interesting. Good luck

Yup totally agree with the previous post. Cheap food full of fillers and you end up with dodgy outputs to put it mildly.

In my experience some breeders will choose or can't afford to feed their pups a better diet. Same happened to my pup. I changed him straight onto a better, dry kibble at 8 weeks and he was fine even with changing him straight away.

Also totally agree with, inform yourself, buy the best you can afford. Canine nutrition is a minefield and a rabbit hole not worth getting into an argument about. Each to their own....

I feed raw and he never has smelly flatulence unless he finds something on a walk to eat that he shouldn’t!

Just as a follow up to this, if any one else has the same issues.
I went on the website recommended by Edp and my little pup is now on Orijen large breed puppy and doing so much better! His poops are more regular and a good consistentancy and no more trumps!! Also where his fur was starting to go a bit more coarse on his back, its now back to being soft, I'm guessing that all the fish ingredients in Orijen.
So thank you for all your advice guys

That's great. My pup has been thriving on Orijen and Acana too. I think it makes total sense to spend money on the best dog food you can afford and not on treats. Treats can be raw veg and fruit and pup will get even more vitamins etc.

    Wishing you well.
