Hey there, I have a 17 month old male black lab and he’s been having issues with interdigital cysts and skin allergies for almost 8 months now. I’ve taken him to several vets and they’ve put him on things like apoquel and other medications that fixed the issues but only temporarily. Lately I’ve been using mal-e-ket wipes trying to keep his paws under control with the infections and cysts but nothing seems to work. I’m not sure if it’s a good allergy or something different but I was curious if anyone has dealt with this and how they’ve solved it. I’ve tried vets and my next step is the dermatologist but if anyone has any expertise on how to fix/control the skin allergies I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
Hi I posted this in response to another post on allergies a while back. Useful to use the search at the top of the page to see what other threads are on here. Have you established that they are environmental allergies or food allergies? We went down the route of an anallergenic diet to eliminate food as the issue then blood tests revealed the environmental allergies. Most very difficult to avoid especially things like dust mites. The best treatment available seems to be Cytopoint injections that are taylor made to your dog’s allergies but were going to be over £100 per month. If he was constantly scratching/biting to excess I would reconsider but at the moment he is very settled. Good luck finding a solution.
Not scientific by any means but when I need to feed him kibble over a long period of time --several weeks of backpacking-- he develops cysts on his underside, some as large as a golf ball. When back on his usual raw diet they disappear. Go figure.
