One of my Labradors was recently diagnosed with diabetes. (Luckily, he is insured) regardless he would have had whatever he needed to lead a happy healthy life. My question is how long can dogs live after being diagnosed. I've Googled and lots of reports of 2-3 years some others saying they can have a normal life span . Our vet told us there is no reason my Lab cannot live to a good age. Did you have a Lab with diabetes how long did they live please? Thank you.
Hi. My border collie lived with diabetes for 2.5years. She was diagnosed at 11.5years. Can I ask, do you live in the UK?
Our first Lab, Ginger, became diabetic at 12 and lived to be 16. She got two shots a day, and we did blood sugar checks to keep her pretty well regulated. It is common for diabetic dogs to develop cataracts, but Ginger never did. She was quite active and in good health until about 15-1/2. She had surgery for Laryngeal Paralysis at 14, and recovered very quickly. (less than a week) We did the blood sticks on the inside of her lip, since there aren't a lot of nerves there and it is easy to stick. I don't know if we could do that with Cooper, since she is not as compliant as Ginger was.
