We have 2 labs, 10 year old chocolate and 6 year old black - both bitches. very shocked after the chocolate who was looped round a picnic bench, jumped at a small child barked in her face and really scared her. Grandma, understandably furious, said she’d bitten her but I don’t think she had broken any skin. It was really horrific. She’s done this twice before - on a beach when a girl approached her from behind, the girl got scratched as the dog jumped, largely due to the swimsuit. The first time she leapt down our 5 steps from the front door and jumped at our neighbours 3 year old granddaughter. So always female children. We are very cautious with our 4 and 2 year old grandsons- this started after they arrived! I am really hoping someone can help me please.
Hi Jen. This sounds so stressful for you, I'm sorry you're having to deal with this. Unfortunately it's very difficult for us to comment on reactive behaviors like this 'from a distance'. Instead we recommend that you start by getting a vet check, to rule out any physical causes of a behavior change for her. And if that's all fine, we recommend making an appointment with a professional canine behaviorist, who can visit in person to assess your dog and make a personalised management plan with you, to help improve things. Do make sure to pick someone who uses modern, positive only, methods. Your vet may be able to recommend someone in your area.
Thank you. Much appreciated. I will do as you suggest. On reflection I think the little girl ‘surprised her’ Maisie was snoozing after her walk attached to a picnic bench under the table. This had happened on the beach, Maisie was on a lead looking out to sea and the girl came from behind and touched her! However, still not ok! I think she’s more anxious since our 4 year old and 18 month old grandsons arrived - she’s very ‘watchful’ when we are out with them. My sons 7 year old black male lab was also with us on Saturday and I believe she finds the responsibility of protecting her pack too much ♀️ we had a very alpha golden retriever bitch when we got Maisie - she was bought up with a paw of steel! When she died, taking over was probably too much…..poor girl
You're very welcome . It sounds like Maisie's been through a lot of changes recently, and might be feeling a bit stressed. I'm sure you know this, but just a gentle reminder never to leave her (or any dog) alone with either of your grandchildren. I know it's a nuisance but it would be sensible to keep them separate from her, even when supervised, until after your vet check and behaviorist visit.
