Our newest Lab, Jenny, is very well behaved for the most part. At 20 months she is rambunctious but listens pretty well and has good recall. Unfortunately she is inclined to surf the table and counters when she is left on her own. She looks for food, or tissue or boxes. I don’t want to crate her when we go out for an evening, but I’m not sure how to discourage her since it is a self rewarding activity. We try to put everything away, but she finds things we didn’t think of We have a Jenny cam but we can’t see everywhere, or watch all the time. Any suggestions for changing this behavior. She seems to understand when we catch her, but she mostly does it when left alone for a couple of hours so we aren't here to redirect her.
Unfortunately the only real solution to this is a management, rather than a training, one. Which is to say.... you need to pick a 'Jenny space' for her to use while you're out, and really thoroughly remove absolutely everything she could harm, or that could harm her. It's such a nuisance to do, but it really is the best solution I'm afraid!
