Hi, we have a 5month old Labrador puppy. The past few days when very tired, she has started growling and snapping at us. For example after a walk if we try move her in the car she with snarl and snap. Today my son tried to stroke her whilst she was sleeping and she snapped at his face. She is a very friendly pup, loves people and other dogs, she’s a dominant character very different to our last lab. I understand this behaviour is her way of communicating that she wants to be left alone just wondering how best to manage it , as don’t want it to escalate. Thanks in advance
As a starting point, I would take her straight to the vet to rule out any medical cause/pain. All being well, they can then refer you to a veterinary behaviourist to look into. In the meantime, I'd suggest keeping the kids away from the puppy to avoid anyone getting bitten.
Hi Chocopupmum - so sorry to hear you're having to deal with this. I agree with 5labs - vet check first and foremost, and it's a good idea keep the kids separate until you have a better handle on what's happening. If the vet gives her the all clear, an in-person appointment with a professional canine behaviourist would be a good next step. Your vet may be able to recommend someone in your area, or if not, the ABTC is a good place to look: https://abtc.org.uk/
