    Hi everyone.

My lab has gone downhill these past 7 days.. he can no longer jump on the sofa or climb stairs. He's off his food & now is yelping in pain when I try to lift him to help him up. Once standing he wags his tail & tries going for a walk which I'm watching him closely for when it's too much. Any suggestions on how I can help him is greatly appreciated. I'm taking him to vets tomorrow & I'm petrified he's not going to be coming home. Thank you

    Hi there,

Welcome to the forum, I'm sorry you're joining us at such an emotional and scary time for you. How did it go at the vet's today?

I think a vet check is in order.

    Hi everyone.
    Thank you for your replies.

He was put to sleep 27th January

The vet said she could feel a growth in his stomach & from experience it was probably cancer. His stomach was swollen & so she wasn't really bothered about his weak legs, her concern was his stomach bloating & swelling. She offered a scan to prove it, but said its either burst or has been bleeding & that's what's causing the swelling. They could opera but at 14 it's not the best option & even if they did remove it from the liver or kidneys, it's probably already spread & the kindest thing was to let him go now seeing as he's already struggling.
So I am devestated & grieving my boy as I had no idea he had cancer. I miss him so. The house is empty without him.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Dogs can never stay with us long enough, but 14 years is a wonderful age for a Lab to reach - you must have cared for him very well, and given him a fantastic life. I hope that in time it gets easier to look back and take comfort from the happy times. Take care of yourself, Sarah x
