Hi my 6 month puppy constantly licks my 6 year old lab and is in her face when excited. My old lab tells her off and growls at her when to much and we also separate then. My puppy is submissive and will roll on her back when growled at but she just doesn't seem to get the message. Is this normal or is there some additional training in should be doing? Any advise appreciated.
Hi Leo, how long has your new pup been with you? It is pretty normal for puppies to pester older dogs at first. And some do keep doing this as they grow older. The most important thing is to make sure your older dog always has the option of leaving - so let them into another room if they ask, or remove the puppy if needed. Can you distract your pup away from the older dog with chew toys, interaction with you, etc? Sammie.
Thanks for the reply Sammie pup is 6 months and has been with us from 8 weeks. I know she is still learning and is doing great in general. She just doesn't seem great on picking up on my older dogs signals. She is very submissive though and it's all playful. We separate and redirect
It sounds like you're doing well, and it's mainly a question of being persistent! One of the things that can really help pup realise that YOU are more interesting than other dogs is building plenty of fun (one on one) training sessions together into your routine. If that's not something you're doing yet, that may be worth building into your days, too
