Well since puzzle is our first girl, we are looking for advice about her coming into season. we know that from 6 months onwards she can have her first season, but that is as far as our girly knowledge goes. We would like to especially know how long her seaon should last and really just some general info on it. and what the signs are of her coming into season, barley getting interested in her is no use as he is doing that already, so he is no help, but luckily he has been done

I've only ever had Riley and he's definitely not a girl :)

I've heard that "Book of the Bitch" is excellent though and not only if you plan to breed but for all things girl dog specific. It may be a useful reference for you as well as all the good advice you'll get from people who have had female dogs :)

Yes, 'Book of the Bitch' is an excellent reference guide.

Puzzle will be fine Annabelle. Just keep an eye out for drops of blood, which may be the first sign you notice. Also her vulva will swell, and she may become more clingy than normal, and she will probably urinate more often than normal too. The season will last around three to four weeks, with one week being the worst time when she is at her most fertile. Poppy is my first girl dog too, so I was learning what to expect with her, but now I know that she bleeds bright red blood for about 10 days, then the discharge changes to almost colorless, and this is the time we have to really watch out for male dogs. It then tails off after about 21-22 days, but apparently all bitches are different, so don't go by this timing, you'll just have to watch and learn what her physical timing is!

Don't worry, it's not as bad as you think it is going to be. :)

One thing I would add Annabelle is that some bitches ( Millie was one ) turn into complete floozies when in season, so its isnt just the male dogs you have to look out for if Puzzle is the same as Millie was , the girls can get quite desperate at times ;)

I'm glad you asked this Annabelle as I was going to ask it next month :) It is all new for me too.

We have 2 male labs next door (18 weeks and 9 months old - neither are being done til next year sometime). I really don't know how we will manage for that long keeping them apart as they play together every day! I'm hoping hers will come when the weather is bad so hoping she won't won't to go out in the garden as much, but any suggestion would be helpful.

All I can say is - vigilance is key. You really don't want an unplanned pregnancy at 8 months old.

Oh gosh yes,Ternaya.....be so careful ......the power of a male dog wanting to get to a bitch in season is something I had time to reflect on after Dexter dragged me along the floor in the park after a beagle......the telling of the tale got a lot of laughs but it was scarey and certainly not funny if you were the person doing the impression of being a sledge!.....

    Hi annabelle

I have only had male dogs but we walk with 2 rotweiller bitches and when they are in season it's gets very interesting not to mention hard work!!! ::)

They are usually in season for about 3 weeks. My dogs start taking a lot if interest from the beginning but it's the second week when the bitch gets very interested. They will curl their tail, stick their bums in the dogs face and 'stand' for the dog. A bitch will go looking for a male at this time. (terrible trouble with next doors jack Russell a few months ago pestering us!) I find my two are worse during the last week of the bitches season. Whether they give off a scent that says its now or never I don't know. The bitch though is not interested at all by this point.

Good luck just keep your eye on her.

    Jen

Yes , vigilance is the key , we thought that Millie was trailing off and then noticed a small blood loss again, so in total , she was in season for a full four weeks :(

Puzzle is currently in the middle of her season we reckon.

Today she started leaking clear fluid, not a few drops, lots of drops, almost a constant trickle. Should i be concerned about this or is it normal. When she was bleeding it was just a few drops here and there but this is different :-\
