    This subject came up recently...

I've adopted a consistent slip lead means "proper heel" and flat collar means loose leash - thanks Barbara. So on slip lead, no pooing or peeing. Ok.

On flat collar though, while I don't mind him stopping for a poo or pee, I'm not stopping at every lamppost - as he was just beginning to do last week - bit too annoying.

I've been reading a bit about how to stop your dog marking outside when on a lead. The advice is keep him away from vertical things. having a laugh I think!

So, I've been praising him for his first pee, if it's a squatty long one, and treat. And then viewing lampposts, telecom cabinets etc. as distractions to walk past without stopping. He was good and went poo on command during his "go sniff" time.

Sound sensible strategy for a pet in a built up area? I can't think what practical else to do...

It sounds sensible to me and cross fingers you'll find that translates to less peeing when he's off lead once he's better :)
I'm trying to take Pippa's advice once we're onlead walking again to allow the early pee and then keep him moving at a brisk pace. Hoping this will encourage him to pee less frequently generally ::)

I couldn't be doing with seasons but I would cheerfully give up the marking.....my own fault for letting him do it so much though ::)

Its a thing this stopping to pee with the boys. Like julie we do a fair bit of dandering in a city environment where everying vertical has been weed on. And to make it even more time consuming to get anywhere, since brods started doing this a lot more recently cuillin has decided that girls need to check out everything thats been weed on too. Normalyt after b has maked but we have had two occassions when shes gone in for a sniff too soon and brods has marked on her head ::). Ive gpne for a Lets Go walk command which means after a needed first wee we bustle slong the streets... is becoming a bit better but they still get sidetracked by a particularly weed on lamppost......I'm adamant it will work tho because they dont do it when we are running together ( Lets Run means lets not stop ever)....

Thanks to the great tips on the forum, I've got a "let's go" command too.

For the first time (after 7 months) I felt completely sorted and knew what I was doing this morning - and didn't come back and think "got to get x sorted".

Flat lead, praise the first long pee, let's go, ah - ah no stopping at the next lamppost, until I say "go sniff" wander round, poo on "poop action!" command, then let's go again, forward on a loose leash.

Gosh. 99% of this dog training lark is being clear in your own mind what the rules are - and that's just for a walk around the block! Poor Charlie couldn't be expected to know until I did!

Sigh....this is something I need major work on too, although not so much the weeing, which doesn't bother me too much, but the eternal sniffing at every single bloomin' microscopical bit of anything that might be remotely interesting...and then the digging through the snow to GET said thing....I need to do some training on this but have to work first on getting his attention while on a walk. He is deaf to clicker, treats, etc.

I had the worst time with this over the summer - I transferred from off and on lead heel in fields and beaches, to walking round a town. A coastal town that had just packed up the summer regatta and the streets were covered in squashed chips, dropped ice cream, cornish pasty crusts...Nightmare. Absolute nightmare.

I used fresh roast beef - and when I said "here" I stuck a large bit of roast beef in his nose, and worked up to him expecting roast beef in my cupped hand (the bending down to get the roast beef under his nose was doing my back in, I had to do it so often!). I'm on to normal treats and "let's go" now, but "let's go" still has to be plenty and often rewarded for leaving that sniff...

Maybe I shouldn't have laughed, but I did.

Just around the corner from our house there is a bus stop. Sometimes we turn that corner and there is a whole queue of people waiting for a bus - as you can imagine, to a Labrador, that looks like a reception committee. Worse still, sometimes we turn that corner and there is no one there. This means the bus has just come, and that, right before boarding, they all dropped whatever it was they were eating. We skip round that corner with me trilling 'Let's Go!' like some demented Joyce Grenfell impersonator...

I'm finding this thread strangely comforting...you know, you sometimes think it is just you who has a particular problem and everyone else has trained their dogs out of it. I walk along streets in Edinburgh on High Alert scanning the pavements obsessively on A Friday night if we have all been in the pub. The problem is Brods knows that a Night In The Pub means that on the way home Drunk Humans Will Have Dropped Stuff. He can move at the speed of light and have half a discarded chip supper, paper and all, down his gob before you can blink....

I agree with you Deb, it is good to know I'm not the only one. My walks used to be peaceful, contemplative affairs. Now I don't see much more than the sidewalk and Simba's head....

    Makes me feel better too.
Us country bumpkins make it into "town" once in a blue moon.
Why take your dog + a n other to stand outside a shop?
But then again I do prefer internet shopping ;D
