I was just talking to someone in our local shop who told me that at all times dogs must be on a lead in a public place. Even the grassed area where I've seen dogs running around free of the lead, she told me it was illegal as it was a public park and the law is there to protect people. So I asked her where was the allowed areas for dogs to run free, she said there is non or on your own property. She said that the police are cracking down on this issues and she hoped that by May there would be signs in our local park.

Having 4 children we've visited lots of parks and I've never had any problems with dogs in the actual fenced off play area. They've all been on the grassed area. I live near to a race course and around the track a lot of dog walkers go- on and off lead- and so do people. My kids and I have walked that track many times and they have always asked me or the owners if they can say hello to their dogs- most say yes- some say no.

Sorry gone off track here. Can anyone tell me if this law exists or what the law is on dogs in public places. Our Jax has his final injection tomorrow and I can't wait to take him out as he loves playing outdoors. Thank you.

Hi Lisa, as I understand it if there is no sign stating DOGS MUST BE ON A LEAD then they don't have to be. The park in our village has this sign and nobody takes a blind bit of notice and to top it all they let their dogs foul this area when it is used by the local Primary School and the Teachers have to go and clear up before the children can go out and play. Due to their ignorance dogs may well be banned from using the park, always the minority spoiling things for the majority  makes my blood boil. We always have our dogs on lead in this park as it's just a route to beautiful countryside walks that these dog owners could actually use if they could be bothered.

I hope you find somewhere to let Jax off lead, you could check with your local Council Office. Good luck :)

Lisa, I think the actual statement is this : Dogs must be under control in public places , rather than actually onlead :)
There are a couple of places in my village where a notice states Dogs on lead only , but Helen is right, unless you see this sign, its a case of keeping your dog from being a nuisance/danger to the public at large . The law certainly doesnt state that dogs must be onlead unless in your own garden , so she is wrong there, just under control :)
