Hi everyone! I'm new here. We just got a lab puppy 3 weeks ago. I came right to this site the day we brought her home due to a recommendation from a friend. So I've been reading a lot and so far we've been working on crate training and potty training and nothing else. When we brought her home we started taking her outside every 30 mins (set a timer) and she only had a few accidents in the house. She is really good about giving signals and walking to the back door whining when she wants to go out. I rarely am using the timer now, but just offering her to go outside. Whenever I let her out i have her touch the bell I hung on the back door. Shes not really getting that too easily yet but I'm hoping repetition will help. Crate training is going well. I am able to leave her for a few hours during the day if I need to, though I don't often. She wont have an accident in her crate, and happily sleeps in there at night with no waking now. So I feel like we might be ready for some training! The only training I've done is say "Sit" when I feed her so that she sits before I put her food down. So she kind of knows sit. LOL. What do you suggest I start with next? Oh, and her name is Penny.
Re: Hello, New Puppy! Hi. Welcome to you and Penny! I'm Caroline and I have an eleven week old lab Buddy and a 12 year old lab Fudge. It sounds as if you are doing everything great- very well done!
Re: Hello, New Puppy! Welcome to you both. Sounds like you are doing really well I'm sure Penny will get the hang of the bell soon.....keep trying. Getting her to sit is really good. Maybe you could try wait - I put Harley's food down get her to sit then wait - this means she cannot have her food until I say 'go on then'. I also use this for training - I put a treat on the floor or somewhere in sight, get her to sit and wait, then again say 'go on then'. This has helped with her sitting and waiting at the front door when going for a walk and when people come into the house. Good luck Ternaya and Harley (19 weeks old)
Re: Hello, New Puppy! hi good luck from me and jasper 1 year old, IN 45 MINS,....you sound like you are doing very well, keep it up x
Re: Hello, New Puppy! Hi there, I've got Dexter nearly 15 months old a yellow boy.have a look on the main site there is lots of good advice and suggestions for training....my advice would be to read up a lot about lead walking!if you get it right first time then your life will be so much easier.i messed it up,and it was tough to fix x
Re: Hello, New Puppy! Welcome!! Sounds like you have made a wonderful start with Penny. I'd be working on a cue to get her attention on you and also the recall
Re: Hello, New Puppy! Warm welcome from me, two year old Sam and our rescue girl Millie , what a good start you have made , keep reinforcing the Sit , and then the recall , great work
Re: Hello, New Puppy! Hi and welcome from Poppy and me! Yes, the first thing is teaching your puppy to stick with you, so when you go into another room or into the garden, make yourself LOTS of fun and she will follow you around likeā¦ well, like a little puppy, actually! This will be very useful when you first venture out into the big wide world and bravely let her off her lead!
Re: Hello, New Puppy! Yay! She rang the bell on her own tonight!! That was exciting! Can someone tell me how often I should have her following me around? I mean is this an all day/every day type thing or just certain times? I dont know what the Recall is... Thanks so much for your help!
Re: Hello, New Puppy! Sorry, recall is just coming when called This article is a start: http://www.thelabradorsite.com/?p=815 And here is a video demo of how to go about it with a puppy: http://www.thelabradorsite.com/?p=1945 Great result with the bell!!!! Got a friend who has taught her Lagotto this, using an antique shop bell. It's pretty cool You may find that your puppy naturally wants to follow you around all the time. If so, no problem Labradors just want to be with you. They usually come into the toilet, given half a chance...
Re: Hello, New Puppy!
They usually come into the toilet, given half a chance...
Yep and mine at nearly 15 months still does!silver lining...it was good opportunity to parcatice, sit, stay, lie down ,stay x
Re: Hello, New Puppy! I had to remove Brew from the bathroom the other evening. I don't mind her dozing on the floor, but she was determined to get in the bath... Clare
Re: Hello, New Puppy! Well done on the bell ringing ;D Harley follows me everywhere all the time - even if she is playing with hubby, if I walk out of the room 9/10 she will follow me, check what I'm doing then go back to hubby
Re: Hello, New Puppy! Hi there! Welcome to you and Penny Sounds like you are doing good. I think we taught sit stay and down first, but maybe should have worked more on "come to me" and recall, as this is Lilly's downfall. I think this is what I would work on most if I was starting all over again (which I am not, Sophie!)* Have you worked out how to post a picture yet? - we would love to see one - there is some information in the technical help section about this. Good luck Jac *PS - Sophie is my daughter who is also an on off user of the forum - just needed her to know we weren't getting another puppy ;D ;D
Re: Hello, New Puppy! Awwwwww, so cute, takes me back a few months! They grow so quickly. Enjoy this time with her
